Why’d you join NURF? Food is such an important part of my life and once I learned a lot about issues like food insecurity, animal abuse, and the effects of our food system on the environment, change within the food system became something I was passionate about fighting for. So, as soon as I found out about NURF and it’s mission, I knew it was something that I wanted to be a part of.

Katie Braun

Why’d you join NURF? I was initially drawn to NURF when I first learned about how wasteful our food system is and how industrial agriculture is destroying the environment. Since then, my passion for food and food issues - from food access to health to workers' rights - has only grown. I love that we're making real change on campus through student action.

Morgan McFall-Johnsen

Previous Co-Director

Major: Journalism, French, and Environmental policy and culture

Why’d you join NURF? Food has played a large role in my life, having grown up in a family that deeply values cooking and the ability to feed yourself well, even with limited resources. My dad has always been a fan of this old maxim: “If you give someone a fish, they’ll eat for a day. If you teach them how to fish, they’ll eat for life.” The Real Food campaign addresses urgent issues of equality and sustainability, both for the environment and for people.

Bailey Smith-Helman

Previous PR Chair

Major: Political Science and Environmental Policy and Culture

Why’d you join NURF? I'm interested in the environmental impacts of the food system and alternative food systems. NURF has allowed me to play an active role in the sustainable food movement on campus. Being a part of NURF has given me the opportunity to engage with passionate students and faculty and learn more about what real food means.

Dorothy Hogg

Previous Intern

Major: statistics and environmental policy and culture

Why’d you join NURF? I joined NU Real Food because I’m very passionate about sustainable food systems. I think it is so important to ourselves and the environment that we support those working to make the food system better and eat naturally grown foods lower on the food chain.

Elise Echeverria

Previous Marketing Chair

Major: journalism and Sociology minor at Northwestern.

Why’d you join NURF? I was inspired to join the team with a hope to better educate myself and work towards positive change on our campus. I like that NURF considers how food effects people and planet and works to create a more conscious food system in our dining halls.
